When does an island fit and when does it not?
The practical rule: at least 90 cm of free space is needed on each side of the island to allow passage with the oven open, and 120 cm if two people are going to cross each other while cooking. Below that, the island becomes an obstacle.
In practice, this means a kitchen at least 3.5 meters wide. If your kitchen measures less, we will tell you and suggest a peninsula, which gives almost the same result while occupying half the space.
What nobody tells you: the installations
Putting the sink or the cooktop on the island is not just moving a piece of furniture. The water and drainage have to run underneath the floor, which means lifting it or raising the island on a platform. The extraction is the same: it either goes to the ceiling or runs through the floor with recirculation.
All of this is decided before starting and is included in the budget. It is not an extra that appears halfway through the work.
Will an island fit in your kitchen in Benijófar?
It comes down to the floor plan, and round here they tend to be large, with an outside window and some with access to the garden. In detached houses and duplexes you usually have to free up space first: what we are asked for most in the area is replacing the units with something more modern and making the most of the daylight.
